The Hard Interchange is supported by a 1970s concrete jetty structure built over the River Wallington extending from The Hard highway to Portsmouth Harbour railway station. Besides supporting a new multi-modal Interchange building the concrete jetty structure also supports areas of pedestrian walkway and the bus apron.

The Bus Apron Pavement Reconstruction project involved the total removal of the defective existing bus apron pavement down to slab level of the 1970s jetty structure. A replacement bus apron pavement including the waterproofing membrane was then installed and building up the pavement to the existing finished level.

We supported the client to relocate the buses and taxis to ensure no loss of service therefor supporting ultimately the local community by ensuring that all travel services and all facilities including toilets were not impacted to reduce the inconvenience of the construction works. A significant outcome included no services being cancelled due to the works.

Through our long-established supply chain, we sourced all our materials from within 30 miles and wherever possible within 15 miles.

Understanding the importance of community support, we provided a temporary bus shelter to protect service users from the elements. This initiative was well-received and garnered significant local support. Our team, composed entirely of directly employed local individuals, further strengthened our community ties. Additionally, we offered graduate placements and work experience opportunities throughout the project, sourcing local talent and contributing to the community’s growth.

The transport hub reopened at 7:00 am on the 2^nd January 2025, following completion.
