National Apprenticeship Week Events at Walworth Road, Andover
Mildren Construction kicked off National Apprenticeship Week last week at our Walworth Road site in Andover.
Under the wing of Sparsholt College who are running various events over the course of the week, 13 students from Winton Academy visited the live Mildren site for Mock Apprenticeship Day.
The students spent the morning with Nicki Main, HSEQ Advisor and Community Officer, along with Aaron Dodds, Contracts Manager and Adrian Evans, Site Manager.
Pupils were absorbed from the outset. We gave the all-important safety presentation then toured the site, discussing different construction methods and engaging with the students over various questions.
Paul McGregor, Design and Build Manager and John Scott, Quantity Surveyor, joined us for the careers session. Each Mildren team member spoke about their individual roles within the company and how they all fitted into the Walworth Road project. As anyone in construction knows, there’s something for everyone….
Nicki Main outlined the value of taking on an apprenticeship, and 10 of the 13 students asked for more information, which is great buy-in. One student said “I would never think of construction as a career but you’ve helped me see it could be fun.” We look forward to a possible new appointment!
The morning ended with a competition. Students were given marshmallows and spaghetti to build a stable structure and we gave clues on designs during the site tour. Well done to the winning team who received a box of chocolates.
